A space with a split personality. That’s Macquarie University’s new MUSE library space - a 4000sqm shell of a disused building at the University’s Macquarie campus. When awarding the design contract, the uni divided the site into four, giving four different architects a quarter of the space each. The brief was challenging: each architect produced a profoundly different design in their quadrant, the shell required a full services upgrade, a desire to maintain the “rawness” of the space and the required adaptive reuse of materials, added complexity and all set against a tight academic timetable and program. These were just some of the interesting challenges faced by Grindley Interiors when they were engaged in 2013 to fit out the MUSE space, which recently opened and students at Macquarie are now enjoying!

Technology in Aged Care
presented by Ross Thompson, Director of JHA
Technology touches our everyday life in more ways than we can count. However, many technological advances which have the potential to improve resident outcomes are yet to reach our Aged Care facilities. As residents are handed smartphones and iPads by their children and so become increasingly tech-savvy, the door is opening for new systems and approaches to care delivery to be introduced. eHealth and the provisions for the Electronic Doctor are now a reality, aided by high definition cameras and high speed internet. At this Foti Forum, hear from Ross Thompson from JHA, who has been exploring these leading edge systems and more at a new facility soon to be constructed, which is likely to set the benchmark for all such facilities.

Annual Foti Brisbane Golf Day
Thursday, 21 February 2013 - 7:00am
The first Foti Brisbane event for the year will be a day on the greens.
Members who’ve attended previous Foti golf days will know to expect a full day of networking and building industry connections while comparing elite (or otherwise) golfing abilities. This year brings a new venue, the Indooroopilly Golf Club.
The cost is $158 per player, payable on the day, and includes 18 holes, breakfast and a two course lunch at the Club.
The forum was hosted by our friends at Opus at their Chatswood office. Opus has designed the 49 level mixed use high rise building ‘Era by Mirvac’ in Chatswood adjacent to their office. The construction phase is nearly half way complete, with the basements and up to Level 16 constructed. Opus’ presentation will focus on the technical challenges associated with design of a large high rise building, including a seven level basement directly adjacent to a live rail corridor, lateral stability for wind and earthquake loads, the use of precast columns, and coordination of building elements to avoid large transfer slabs within the structure.
hosted by our friends at Grindley on 12th September, 5:30 – 7:30 at their Pymble headquarters. Grindley has been working hard on the well-publicised significant upgrade to the Scenic Railway in the Blue Mountains. Grindley Managing Director Rod Burger will give a presentation on the unique features, the challenges faced and lessons learnt delivering this iconic project.
Hosted by structural and civil engineers TTW; property cost and feasibility advisors Sweett Group; and BCA and building certification consultants Blackett Maguire + Goldsmith. Continuing the theme of collaboration and partnership, the three firms will give a joint presentation on their collaborative approach in delivering health care projects.
